A polyptych is a multi-panelled painting, usually used as an altar-piece. This particular anonymous polyptych shows the life of Christ, and except for the first three panels, (Annunciation, Birth of Christ and Three Kings,) the other 9 show various scenes from the passion of Christ, from the Last Supper to the Resurrection. These panels were produced also to be used as visuals to teach children and adults about the life of Christ, similar to the role that stained-glass windows had over the years.
